My So-Called RIJF Plans . . . Part Three

Here are my picks for Monday and Tuesday, June 12-13, at the Rochester International Jazz Festival:

Monday, June 12

  • 6:15 pm, BraamDeJoodeVatcher, Max Of Eastman Place—Friend of Jazz@Rochester Ken Smoker over at Fretful Porpentine put this group on his list immediately. I think I’ll give them a try. According to the review of the group posted on the RIJF’s page for them, “[t]hese guys make [complex, improvisational jazz] giddy fun you can’t get enough of.” What more can you ask for? I saw Mose Allison in a prior RIJF and enjoyed him, but I want to continue to branch out and try new things.
  • 8:30 pm, Sonya Kitchell, Robert Mondavi Club Pass Big Tent—OK, after all the hype about her being the next “about-to-be-discovered” a la Norah Jones, I would like to hear her. Getting into to the tent to do it may be another story….
  • 10:00 pm: Billy Bang Quintet, Montage—Billy Bang played a great show here at the Montage at an earlier rendition of RIJF (was it 1, 2 or 3? Can’t quite recall off the cuff, although I might be able to figure it out with some time). Will probably have to leave Kitchell early to get a place in line.
  • Tuesday, June 13

  • 6:00 pm: Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music—The real deal from NOLA. Missed them when they appeared here recently. Plans in the works to meet some friends who don’t get out for the RIJF much ….yet.
  • 7:15 pm or 9:15 p.m.: Hard Logic, Strong Health Jazz Street Stage—I love acid jazz and other jazz influenced by hip-hop, world, and other diverse musics, and have heard enough of this group to want to check their gig out. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll head over to see Gray Mayfield Trio with Delfeayo Marsalis at the Tent. I’m passing on Phil Woods at the Eastman. Saw him in NYC at Birdland a couple of years ago and would like to keep that one as my memory of him (sat at the bar and had an opportunity to talk with him and a member of his trio) rather than this outing with strings. Love the Bird, but never really got the whole strings thing.
  • 10:00 pm: Robert Glasper Trio, Max Of Eastman Place—I couldn’t find the issue, but I remember reading some good things about Glasper and his incorporation of diverse styles, including R&B and hip-hop into his compositions.
  • Check out the lineup page on the RIJF site and click on the links for each of these artists to get more information, links and some MP3s. More tomorrow or on Saturday (heck, I’m going to be at the FEST tomorrow night right after work!).

    1. If possible, I’d like to urge people to check out the Clarissa Room, if they haven’t already. It’s a great place for jazz and blues. Please patronage this cozy friendly energetic place on Clarissa Street to support it in all ways. There’s usually no cover charge (only once in three years have I known there to be one), there’s a mix of people of ages and backgrounds…if you like to dance (any style, freestyle, swing, blues, whatever) there’s a good dance floor. But lots of people just go to listen and enjoy. Tables for people who get there early enough; bar and other spots to stand and relax. Back deck for fresh air and/or smoking. Free parking on the street.
