And it begins again . . . 2006 RIJF lineup announced

Well, as you can see from the Archive links on the right sidebar, I started this puppy about 1 year ago. One of my first posts (it was the second of two posts on the first day) was about the annoucement of the 2005 RIJF lineup. Well, today John Nugent announced the full lineup and schedule for the 5th annual Rochester International Jazz Festival, presented by Heluva Good Quality Foods, which will be running from June 9-17, 2006. These nine days will include more than 170 concerts and 600 musicians from more than a dozen countries. A quick glance at the schedule and lineup shows some great headliners:

  • Woody Allen
  • James Brown
  • Phil Woods
  • McCoy Tyner & Toots Thielemans
  • Wayne Shorter
  • Etta James & Susan Tedeschi
  • Little Feat
  • Soulive
  • Dickey Betts
  • Byron Stripling
  • I had theorized about Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner in an earlier post, but was not sure that they were coming. I’m glad to see that they are and their appearances, along with some of the other headliners like Etta James and the Godfather of Soul James Brown, may draw me into the Eastman Theater more often than in past RIJFs. Unfortunately, this will likely cause some difficult choices.

The rest of the list shows the same diverse mix of sounds and artists that we’ve come to expect from John Nugent’s jazz programming. There are some real treats in there and some just waiting to be discovered as one of your new favorite sounds. I’ll try to delve into them in more detail in later posts…go see the schedule now at RIJF’s site for now. Now the waiting begins . . . .

    1. I have to say this looks like a great line up. I am sorry to miss the first Saturday. I wanted to see Whit Smith. His Hot Club of Cowtown was a good show two years ago. Ken and I will have to meet up with you. How about Charlie Hunter at 6:00?
