Who do you want for RIJF 2006?

I almost forgot that I promised some time ago that I’d explore some of the voices and sounds I’d like to see at the Rochester International Jazz Festival this year or in the future. I’ll throw out a few here:

  • Kurt Elling. Blue Note recording artist Elling is one of the best male vocalists out there and can scat like there’s no tomorrow. I really miss seeing him and his band play (when I lived in Chicago I saw him quite often at the Green Mill and other venues). I was introduced to Kurt by a friend who had hung out with him while he was a med student at the University of Chicago (Kurt was in Divinity School there) and saw him early (right after he signed with Blue Note) and often thereafter.
  • Patricia Barber. Patricia Barber is another Chicago connection. I’ve never had the opportunity to see her live, but have been listening to her records for years. There is something about her sensual voice, her fine chops on the piano, and the diversity of her choices for material (both as covers and original) that I never tire of listening. Check out her site as it has some great streams of her music, including some video. She’s currently open for the RIJF dates, so who knows? Anyway, if she doesn’t make it here, she’ll be playing the Festival Interntaional de Jazz de Montreal this summer in July.
  • Well there’s a couple to start with. I invite readers to comment to this post and add their thoughts on some artists they’d like to see. More later?

Perhaps they heard . . . Local jazz at the RIJF?

A while back in a post-mortem of RIJF 2005 I mentioned that I thought there should be a greater effort to showcase our local jazz talent during the Rochester International Jazz Fest. This is a start:

  • On June 9th, Melvin Henderson and Jared Schonig of local trio Paradigm Shift will be playing as the Henderson Schonig Trio, featuring Hammond B3 guru Dr. Lonnie Smith (thus explaining the absence of organist Gerry Youngman from the trio). It will be a Club Pass event at the Montage Grille.
  • On June 14th, the members of Paradigm Shift will be backing local sax player Bill Tiberio at a venue to be announced.

Where are ya . . . City Paper?

As you may have noticed, I didn’t get any jazz listings from City Paper in the blog yesterday. While the print edition is out, the listings on the website (the source of my weekly “City Paper” posts after Frank DeBlase graciously gave me the go ahead awhile back) are still from last week. Not sure what’s up, but here are a few highlights for Friday and Saturday, in case they don’t get them up there:

    Friday, March 24th

  • Vince Ercolamento, 10:00pm, Clarissa Room, 293 Clarissa St., 325-5350. Free.
  • Saturday, March 25th

  • Johnny Russo and Doug Robinson, 6:30 to 9:30, Geneva on the Lake, 1001 Lochland Rd., Geneva. Call 800-3-GENEVA. Free.

    RIJF has a Brand New Bag . . .

Apparently, the Godfather of Soul is going to funk it up at Eastman Theater on June 10th. That day is definitely taking on a blues orientation with Roomful of Blues and Little Feat also playing that night. Now, I might pay good money to see the swells in Eastman getting their groove on to Sex Machine.
