A couple of shows at the new Montage Grille.

Along with many who had a few worries after the Montage re-opened, seemingly to become an overflow spot for the 20-something crowds from East Ave, I have been surprised and heartened by the bookings. The former Montage had served an eclectic menu of music with its fine dining experience. Sure now the fine dining is gone (it was always sort of surreal, I have to admit) and there are the usual local party bands, but heck, they need to pay the bills. These two shows are sort of short notice (actually the first one is tomorrow), but worth checking out if you can get out on a school night:

  • David “Fathead” Newman, Thursday, May 26th at 7 and 9pm, at the Montage Grille, 50 Chestnut St. (near East Ave., behind RG&E Building), Rochester (585-232-1520). Cover is $20 advance/$23 at the door, and $40 for VIP seating.
  • On Sunday at the Montage, there is a show that is becoming more interesting by the hour (they confirmed two more artists while I was writing this). I guess Sunday won’t be a school night this weekend. Support local jazz radio and go to the:

  • Artistry In Jazz Benefit Concert, with Harold Danko, Mike DiMartino, Tony Padilla, Rich Thompson, Fred Stone, Dan Vitale, Dan LaBate, John Francione & more (they’ve just confirmed Alex Skolnick (from Transiberian Orchestra) and blues artist Coco Montoya), Sunday, May 29th starting at 4pm, at the Montage Grille, 50 Chestnut St. (near East Ave., behind RG&E Building), Rochester (585-232-1520). Cover $15 per person (includes food). Proceeds will help fund operating & airtime costs of Tom Pethic’s Artistry in Jazz radio show which debuted last August on Legends 990 AM (10 a.m. to noon Saturdays). Contact Tom Pethic, at ArtistryinJazz@bluefrog.com for more details.
  • I’m planning on going to one or both of these shows. Haven’t seen the “new” Montage, so I’m looking forward to it. Too bad I couldn’t get them to honor the gift certificate we received from some of our colleagues at work for our wedding prior to the closing of the prior incarnation of Montage. It was worth a try….
